Professor Gary Hill from California State University Long Beach is has integrated building FOBO into the curriculum for his  EE400D Electrical Engineering Design Seminar and Project Class.  You can follow their progress on the class blog.  The class started by building open source 3D printers and then they used the 3D printers to print FOBO..  The final phase of the class involves building extensions for FOBO such as a pan-tilt sensor mount and a battery safety cut off device.  This is the kind of class that I would have loved to have taken as an undergrad (or even grad student)!  I'm really excited to see what the come up with ... keep up the good work guys!
